The Merry Month of May!

There are some very important dates
to mark on your calendar this month, starting with...
May Day on the 1st,
Cinco de Mayo on the 5th,
Nurse's Day (and my birthday) on the 12th,
Mother's Day on the 13th,
Armed Forces Day on the 19th
and then we wrap up the month with
Memorial Day on  the 28th.

May You Have a Wonderful Month!

Mother's Day
Mother's Day is coming up soon, and flowers are a popular gift to give to mothers or someone who has blessed you with the love you would expect from a mother. So this seems like the appropriate time to talk about the traditional language of roses.

Did you know that since Victorian times, the different colors of roses have had different meanings?

For Mother's Day, at least here in the South, it is traditional for both men and women to wear a red rose on Mother's Day to signify that one's mother is living or a white rose to honor the memory of a mother who has passed away. For this reason, you might not want to give white roses to your living mother on Mother's Day, except perhaps mixed with other colors to honor her mother if her mother has passed on.

If you give red roses to your Mom, you signify respect and undying love. This is the most traditional and popular choice. When given to a lover or spouse, red roses signify passion and commitment, as well. Red roses are an excellent choice for a husband to give to the mother of his children.

Yellow roses stand for kindness, cheerfulness and affection, and would be lovely for a mother-in-law, stepmother, or grandmother particularly.

Pink roses convey thankfulness, grace, and femininity. While they are appropriate for any maternal figure, they would be especially thoughtful for people who are not mothers but fill a motherly role in your life, such as an aunt or a mentor, or any female you feel deserves to be remembered on mother's day. They would also be lovely gifts for daughters-in-law who have given you grandchildren, to say thank you for that precious gift.

Orange is an exuberant and enthusiastic color, and while orange roses are not traditional for gifts for Mother's Day, they could be just the thing for a nonconformist mom or for a new mother to express the tremendous joy of a first Mother's Day as a mom.

So if you give roses to your mother for Mother's Day, give some thought to the meaning of the flowers to make your gift extra special.

-- ps: This will be the first Mother’s Day I will observe without my mom, and I will miss her, but the memory of that strong, vibrant woman, so full of joy and love of life is with me every day and I feel fortunate that she was my mom. If you’re blessed with your mother’s presence in your life this Mother’s Day, make sure to take this precious opportunity to let her know how much you love her and appreciate everything she’s done for you.

LOW BALL OFFERS JUST
DON’T WORK ANYMORE!

Over the past 18 to 24 months we’ve seen a steadily recovering real estate market and as a result the tactics for picking up great bargains simply don’t apply anymore.

When the number of home sellers grossly outpaces the number of buyers, no offer can be ignored, even if it’s 25% or more below asking price. But in today’s rebounding market, those low-ball offers don’t often work. Many times, the potential buyer finds that they don’t get a counter-offer. In many cases, the well-priced home goes into a multiple-offer situation and gets sold to the most aggressive, best prepared buyer.

Low-ball offers are still part of the Florida market, mainly from out-of-state or out-of-the-country buyers who have read about the state’s foreclosures and short sales. That news, however, is old; it has not kept up with reality in many areas and buyers who insist on low-balling an offer on a home many times have to switch tactics after they lose a property or two to more aggressive buyers.

Rolling low-balls at sellers may have been an effective approach between 2008 and early 2011, but in 2012’s environment (at least in rebounding markets) it could be counterproductive if you truly want to buy.  Today’s successful buyer is the one who comes prepared by being well-informed about current market conditions and the true value of the property being sold and is ready to submit offers that are close to (and sometimes above) asking price.
